How to Make a Folded House With One Sheet of Paper

2026-01-04_19-50-26_884.png

Made a house for the Make it Fold contest.

Brainstorming:

I've always liked origami although I've had little time for this aspiration because of other hobbies (robotics). I've also always been terrible at drawing, and whenever I drew a house, it would turn out to always be a triangle on top of a square. I was drawing a house in my notes while actually brainstorming for this project, when I though, "Oh, why not make a house just like this doodle but in 3d!" And so, I designed one and am proud to present to you: 3d Doodle House

Supplies

Letter Paper (8.5" x 11")

Pencil

Tape

Ruler

Scissors

Colored Pencils (optional but strongly recommended)

Find the Center of the Paper

First, place your paper in front of you vertically.

Next, put your ruler horizontally on top of the paper. Make sure the 0 inches is on the left edge of the paper. At the mid-point (4.25 inches for letter paper), make a small mark.

Then, turn your ruler vertical and make sure the 0 inches is on the top edge of the paper and that the ruler edge passes through the dot you just made. Mark the point at the mid-point (5.5 inches for letter paper), that is your center.

Draw Guiding Dots

With your ruler still vertical, draw dots 1 inch away from the center dot, 3 inches away from the center dot, and 4.5 inches away from the center dot. Make sure to draw dots on both sides of the center dot.

Next, turn your ruler horizontal and mark dots 1 inch away from the center dot, 3 inches away from the center dot, and 4 inches away from the center dot. Make sure to draw dots on both sides of the center dot.

Connect the Dots

Connect the dots as shown in the images

Cut Out the House

Cut along the outlined shape shown in the image. The remaining steps use folding to form the house.

Lightly Fold

16.png

Lightly fold along the drawn lines to begin forming the walls and roof planes. Do not fully crease yet.

Drawing

Flip over your paper to the clean side and draw a house! Use the light folds to help you differentiate the different parts of the house. Add flowers, trees, grass, whatever you'd like! Let your creativity take over :)

Final Assembly

Flip the paper over to the side with the lines. Place 8 pieces of tape where shown in the image and fold the front and back in before the two sides. OR, tape it however you like!

Done! 😊
