How to Make a Rosebud Brooch
This sweet little brooch works up very quickly with minimal supplies, making it the perfect thing if you feel the sudden urge to add a pop of colour to your outfit!
Supplies
- A brooch back clasp (as seen here)
- A strip of red fabric for the flower- the measurments of the strip used in this tutorial were 1 inch wide and 20 inches long, but you can customize it to make a larger or smaller brooch.
- A bit of green fabric for the leaves
- Basic sewing notions (i.e. needle, thread, scissors, etc.)
Cut Your Strip of Red Fabric
I cut mine at 1 inch wide and just over 20 inches long.
Fold in Half by Width, Then Fold One End Down to Form a Sharp End
We'll actually be folding down both ends like so, but we're just going to start with this one.
Beginning at the Very Tip, Sew Along the Raw Edges With Large Stitches
You don't have to worry about making it perfect- you won't see these stitches when it's finished.
When you come to the end, fold it down into a sharp point as we did with the first one.
Don't tie off your thread at the end.
Carefully Pull the Thread to Ruffle the Strip, Start to Roll It Up
You don't want to pull too tightly here, or else your thread might break and you'll have to restart the seam. Aim for a nice even ruffle, but it doesn't need to be perfect since a real rose isn't going to be exactly symmetrical either.
Now that you've made a ruffle, start at the end where the needle and thread are attached and begin to roll your rose up. Here is where our flower begins to take shape.
Every inch or so you must secure your roll with a few stitches through the base (making sure to pass the needle through every layer at least once).
Continue until the entire ruffle strip has been rolled into the shape of a rose.
Secure your thread with a sturdy knot or two, and snip the excess thread off.
Make the Leaves
- Fold your green fabric over to make two layers.
- Draw two basic leaf shapes.
- Cut your shapes out. You should have two pairs of leaf pieces.
- Sew both pairs together.
- Turn them right side out (since they're so small, that part can be tricky, I used a pen to help push them out properly).
Sew Your Leaves to the Rose
Take care to keep all the visible stitches on the underside of the rose, since it won't be seen there when we're finished.
Attach Your Brooch Pin
I sewed mine on, but if you prefer you can use a craft glue.
Enjoy Your New Accessory!
Et voila! You did it! 🌹
