Most of us had to write essays at some point of our lives. We had to do it in school, college or university. No matter what the purpose may be, there are ways to write a good essay quickly and effectively. You don’t have to be a professional writer to come up with an interesting and solid text. How? Let’s find out.

Start with planning

Study your task and estimate how much time you need to work on it. Develop a writing plan based on that. Your text will consist of several parts, so try and figure out how much time you will need to work on each part.

Estimate your strengths and weaknesses at this stage. For instance, you may be quite good at research, but editing is not your most prominent skill. You might want to assign less time for research and schedule more to spend on the revising section. Don’t forget to plan a few breaks – they will help you to clear your head and get some inspiration.

Know your topic

Look for different ways you could make arguments about the topic. This will not only direct you towards the appropriate research, it will also help the writing process go more quickly and smoothly. If you don’t have an essay topic, choose a subject that interests you. You are more likely to write a good essay on a topic that you are really interested in.

Outline your ideas

Organize your thoughts. By taking what is already in your head and transferring it to paper, you are able to see connections and links between ideas more clearly. This structure serves as a foundation for your paper. Use either an outline or a diagram to write down the ideas and organize them.

For example, if you prefer to create an outline, write your topic at the top of the page. Begin to list your main ideas, leaving space under each one. List other smaller ideas that relate to each main idea. Doing this will allow you to see connections and will help you to write a more organized and well-structured essay.

Be clear

If you are writing quickly, go for simple sentences without difficult grammatical structures. This would also make it less likely that you will misuse some words with meanings you are not quite familiar with.

Avoid “heavy” language when you write. Writing the text that is full of long prepositional phrases, passive verbs and paragraphs that don't help to substantiate your argument is a waste of time.

Take another look

Revise and proofread your essay. No essay is good when it contains mistakes. Revising and proofreading your text will ensure that the essay is free of any errors. It’s also important to revise and proofread so that you leave a good impression on your readers.

Read your entire essay once again. Be certain that you are still arguing the same thing at the end of the essay that you are at the beginning.

Make sure that your paragraphs build on one another and are not controversial to one another. You can use transitions and strong topic sentences to help you establish connections between your paragraphs.

Spelling and grammar are the easiest mistakes to revise, but they may cost you a lot of reader goodwill if you don’t fix them.

These are only a few tips on how to write a good essay, but take one step at a time and soon you will become an expert.
