Marble Roll Game

Awhile ago, I found an empty container of ice cream gathering dust in my closet. I really didn't know why it was there, so I cleaned it up and stored my marbles inside. Only a few days later, the thought of a marble game came to mind. Ever since, I've spent countless hours playing this super fun game with others. In this Instructable, you'll learn how to build one yourself, and a carrier for on-the-go fun.

Supplies

  1. One pint of ice cream (crucial that the lid is 2.5 cm larger in diameter than the bottom of the container and plastic container)
  2. A spoon for eating
  3. Glue
  4. Scissors
  5. Blue Tape
  6. 3 marbles per player
  7. Magnetic adhesive sheets
  8. 2 8 inch by 2 inch pieces of paperboard
  9. 3 22 inch by 3 inch pieces of cardboard

Eat and Wash Container

Wait no further- open that ice cream and eat it! If you're feeling impatient and want to begin the project, yet you aren't capable of eating that all in a short amount of time, empty the ice cream into another container and store in the freezer for another day. Otherwise, eating this could take anywhere from 2 minutes to a few days.

Once you finish, rinse, clean, and dry the container and lid thoroughly. Get ready for a lot of blue tape.

Taping the Target

Take your blue tape and wrap it all over your container and lid. I left a little bit of the container untapped at the top of mine so it'll be easier to see the target. I also didn't tape the inside of my lid for the same reasons, and because it's where the glue will be going. You can now apply glue to the lid and stick on the container. This will take awhile before dry.

Make the Carrier/line

The 3 pieces of cardboard will be used to make the carrier and the line for where you stand behind when playing. Glue the pieces together, firmly pushing them down. After a few minutes of waiting, tape it all up with blue tape.

Attach the Handle and Marble Storage

Cover the two pieces of paperboard in blue tape. As mentioned in my DIY Circuit Board Charger project, you can get paperboard from empty cereal boxes/snack boxes, as well as tissue boxes and board game boxes. Tape the first piece of paperboard onto the middle of the cardboard line. This will be the handle. Shape the second into a half circle (shown above). Like me, you may need to use some tape to enforce this. Take a large piece of tape and a smaller piece of tape. Put the smaller piece of tape in the middle of the large one, and stick it onto one of the sides of the half-circle paperboard. This will keep the marbles from spilling out when stored. Test it out.

Magnets

Take the adhesive magnet sheets and cut out two circles (3 inches in diameter). Stick one onto the bottom of the lid and the other on the empty side of the carrier/line. And now it's finished! Set up the game and get ready to play!

How to Play

Carry your marble game to a firm carpet surface. Other surfaces like wood or concrete can make loud noises and scratch the marbles. Set up the line to a far enough distance as shown above. Give 3 marbles to each player. Here's how to play-

-The objective of the game is to score more points than the other players. The closest marble to the lid is worth 1 point. 2 points for getting it inside the lid. 3 points for getting a marble inside the container.

-Games are played until a player has reached the amount of points to win (20 for example). Rounds are played until each player has thrown all 3 of their marbles. Rounds continue until a player has reached the amount of points to win. If the amount of points to win is 20, then the player who scores 22 points wins the player that scored 20 points.

-Each player has 3 marbles, and the order is round robin. After the end of each round, the order changes to a different player.

-Only 1 player will earn 1 point for being the closest to the lid- while you can earn as many points as earned for the 2 point and 3 point values.

-If a player knocks down the container/target at any time in a round, a new round begins with no points added from the previous round. If a player knocks down the container/target twice in a row, they are automatically removed from the game until the next game.

-One marble cannot earn points from multiple point values. For example, you cannot earn 4 points by being the closest to the lid and inside the container/target for one single marble. However, you can earn multiple points for being inside the container/target (3 points) and for being closest to the lid (1 point) as each player does have 3 marbles.

-Player vs player duels occur when they both tie reaching (or going over) the set amount of points. The player with the most "3-pointers" after the round wins.

Of course, these rules are somewhat confusing, so feel free to play however you want- as long as to get the basic idea. Thanks for reading!
