Metal Rose Ring
I made this finger ring with a metal rose attached on it. I made this for a client as his proposal ring xD.
Supplies
- Fireproof Board
- Butane or Propane gas can
- Blow torch
- Borax water/ Flux
- Jeweler's saw
- Brass wire
- This brass sheet
- Brass Brazing Strips
- Vice Clamp
- Drillpress or drill Machine ( not shown in the picture )
- Brass wire wheel
- Brass polishing compound
Hi everyone! For this project, main focus is on making the metal rose. You'll need to know the basic of welding. But I'll still describe the process of welding in short.
Basic welding Process:
- To join 2 pieces of metal, you need to put those 2 pieces touching each other where the joining will be ( over a fireproof board)
- Grab a thin paint brush and put the borax water/Flux over the joining part with the brush.
- Then attach the blow torch on the butane gas can, start fire and heating the 2 metal pieces.
- when the pieces starts to show a little orange hue, touch the brass brazing strips ends on the joining part ( while still heating up the piece and hovering over. )
- move away the brass brazing strips quickly as soon as it gets melted over the joining part and fills the joint.
- your welding is done!
Also giving a short instruction of the ring blank making if you're interested:
I made this Brass ring blank from a brass nut. first I sanded the edges of the nut with a belt sander to make it round. Then if you have lathe machine, you can chissle the middle of it easily.
The Rose:
- First I Take a thin piece of Brass sheet. Cut one piece of "3 petal shape", 2 pieces of "4 petal shape" and one piece of 4 Leaf shape".
- Drill a tiny hole in each of these at the center.
- Through the holes, inserted all these 4 pieces in a narrow wire.
- first layer (bottom) is the "4 leaf shape", 2nd and 3rd layers are the "4 petal shape" 4th (top) layer is the " 3 petal shape".
- Welded the top and the bottom of the layers on the wire.
- Clamped the wire on a vice.
- Bent the top layer (4th layer) from flat to upwards, then curled the petals ovrlapping each other like rose petals ( with the help of 2 pliers).
- Did the same with layer 3 and 2.
- For the first layer ( bottom layer), bend and curl it downwards.
- After you are satisfied with the shape, release it from the vice and cut the extra wire from bottom.
- The rose is done and ready to be welded on the ring blank!
Weld the rose over the brass ring blank. ( Follow welding instruction from step 1)
After welding, the piece will be left with dark oxidized residue.
- To clean that, I first buffed it with a Soft Brass wire wheel on a drill machine.
- Then polished it using brass polishing compound on a cotton mop on a drill machine.
- Metal works are done here!
For the middle crease of the ring blank I Printed out a strip of galaxy image, attached it on the blank with glue. then put uv resin with a little glitter and cured under uv light.
The ring is finally Complete!
Hope I could help guys! Cheers!
