Mi Casa Y Su Casa (Affordable Housing!)
Hola! In the current world, there are many problems that people face when finding a new home. The biggest problem is being able to find a proper home that is beautiful but also affordable. With this project, I would want to share my idea about making housing more affordable and available to everyone, while also addressing more problems. This house was made for 10 individuals who share equipment, such as the kitchen and restroom, so that it would be cheaper to live in. With 10 people living in one house, it would also create a community, which makes staying in a house more enjoyable. In this project, I will explain the problems I am addressing, the initial sketch, the online 3d model of the house, and the overall benefits of this house.
Let's begin!
Supplies
In this Instructable, I used Fusion 360 to model the house. Along with modeling, I also did tons of research on the dimensions of many furniture and appliances to be able to create an accurate model.
The Problem
As mentioned, there are many problems when getting a new home. The first problem I would want to address is making housing more affordable. Today, the average cost of a house in the United States is around $420,000, with certain states being more than $1,000,000. For my housing to be affordable, it has to be in a location where the costs of construction and labor are cheap. To make it even cheaper, I decided that the house will be shared by 10 people. This allows one person to pay 10% of the overall cost of the house.
The second problem is that not everything is used in the house. For example, some people do not cook in the house, making the kitchen useless. Therefore, having 10 people in the same house allows everything to be used, since there has to be one person who uses it.
The third problem is sharing a home with other people. Having privacy in your own home is important, which is why I wanted the rooms and the backyard to be divided so that everyone has their own area that is uninterrupted from anyone else.
The Location
(image is from Google Maps showing the map of Albuquerque, New Mexico)
The location I decided to choose is Albuquerque, New Mexico. This is because the cost of a home in Albuquerque is around $360,000. The city also has a high demand for affordable housing, which is why I chose this location. Having a house that can have up to 10 people solves the high demand in New Mexico. There are also tons of refugees coming to New Mexico, which is why having cheap housing is a great place for them to start living, and it also creates a community of diverse people from many different countries.
Sketching Out a Plan
This is the initial sketch before I started modeling in Fusion. I wanted 10 bedrooms for the 10 people who will be living in, 6 restrooms with showers, and a kitchen. I also created a storage room in the corner of the house for cleaning equipment so that the 10 people can clean the house and they have a place to store it. For the bedrooms, I planned on including a bed, desk, and a shelf so that it is not empty and are beautifully furnished. The restroom includes a shower, toilet, and sink, which are the basic necessities when living in a house. For the kitchen, I planned on it being 18 ft by 18 ft, but later cut some space for a laundry area for people to wash their clothes.
The House Model
Once I was done creating the sketch, I modeled my house. I did tons of research, figuring out dimensions for furniture and appliances to be able to create this house as accurately as possible. The bedroom has a full size bed with a desk and a shelf to store items. The restroom includes a toilet, a sink with a mirror, and a bathtub with a shower head and a curtain to allow a bath or a shower. The kitchen includes a pantry along with a sink, refrigerator, stovetop, and oven. The laundry room has two washers and dryers, and the kitchen and the laundry room both have tons of cabinets to store more items. The overall house is 2196 sq ft. with around 75 sq ft. of backyard for 10 people.
These are the dimensions of the rooms inside the house:
Bedroom - 10 ft x 10 ft
Restroom - 9 ft x 6 ft
Kitchen - 10.5 ft x 18 ft
Pantry - 6 ft x 6ft
Laundry Room - 10.5 ft x 7.5 ft
Conclusion
In conclusion, each person in the house will be paying for 1 bedroom, 0.6 of a restroom, and 0.1 of the kitchen and laundry room. By sharing the restrooms, kitchen, and laundry room, this makes the house more affordable for people while also housing 10 people. This project was very fun in problem-solving solving not just having affordable housing but also many other problems in this world, which is why I wanted to do it. The house model can be viewed in 3d below.
Thank you!
