Mid-Century Modern Cup Shelf
Ever wondered why a "Mid-Century Modern" shelf costs $50 at a boutique when the raw materials cost less than a candy bar? I’m a DIY enthusiast and a professional "budget master." Today, I’m going to show you how to build a sleek, functional cup shelf. It’s perfect for showing off your favorite mugs while keeping your desk organized.
Supplies
You don’t need a workshop. You just need these items:
- 3 Wood Boards: 40 x 15 x 1.5 cm
- 4 Stainless Steel Threaded Rods: M8 x 40 cm
- 16 M8 Flange Nuts: To hold the boards in place
- 4 M8 Cap Nuts: For the top finish
- 4 M8 Flat Head Nuts: For the "feet"
- Leftover Paint: Whatever you have from your last project (I used half a can of cabinet paint).
Drill the Holes
Precision is key, but don't overcomplicate it.
- Mark a spot 1.5 cm away from every corner on all three boards.
- Drill straight through. Ensure the hole is slightly wider than the M8 rod so it slides in easily.
Raw wood looks "unfinished," but paint makes it "Designer."
- Sand the edges until they are smooth.
- Apply the first coat of paint.
- Wait. Let it dry completely.
- Apply a second coat. This gives it that professional, high-end furniture look.
Assembly
This is where the magic happens.
- The Base: Twist the flat head nuts onto the bottom of the four rods.
- The Layers: Slide the first board down. Secure it with flange nuts.
- The Height: I set my shelf height to 16 cm, but that’s the beauty of this design—you can adjust the nuts to fit your tallest mugs.
- The Top: Finish the rods with the cap nuts for a clean, rounded look.
You now have a custom, industrial-style display for your cups. It’s sturdy, adjustable, and cost you almost nothing.
I mainy build what I want, using what I have. If you run into any issues with the assembly or the painting process, drop a comment below. I’m happy to help you save some cash!
