I made Christmas lights Chocolate Chip Cookies, a winter twist on a classic favorite. Each cookie is soft and chewy in the center as well as slightly crispy around the edges, packed with 2 kinds of rich chocolate chips, and a Christmas magic touch that makes it colorful and festive. I chose this recipe because it balances comfort and creativity—it’s familiar enough to please everyone, but festive, colorful and eye-catching enough to stand out on a contest table and leave a lasting impression. For the Cookies: (makes approximately 25-33 cookies, depending on how big you make them)
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup white chocolate chips (optional)
- 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candies (optional)
- 1/2 - 1 cup festive or original sprinkles (optional)

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line your baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats in order to prevent sticking and ensure even baking throughout. Gather your ingredients and tools so everything is ready and set up, this simple prep step helps your cookies bake perfectly and makes the process smooth, organized and stress-free.
Cream the Butter & Sugars
While your oven is preheating, start by combining softened butter with both brown and granulated sugar in a large mixing bowl. Use a hand mixer or stand mixer to beat them together until the mixture is light, fluffy, and pale in color (usually about 2–3 minutes)
This step is important because it incorporates air into the dough, giving your cookies a soft, airy and fluffy texture, which is what gives the cookies the soft and chewy texture that make them the best!
Make sure the butter is soft but not melted, if it’s too warm, the cookies may spread too much. Scrape down the sides of the bowl occasionally to ensure all ingredients are evenly mixed. Once fully creamed and well incorporated, your dough is ready for the next step: adding the eggs and vanilla for rich flavor.
Add Eggs & Vanilla
Once your butter and sugars are fully creamed together, it’s time to add the eggs and vanilla extract. Crack the eggs into the bowl, mixing thoroughly after adding, so the batter stays smooth and combined. Then add the vanilla and continue to beat the batter until fully incorporated.
This step is crucial for both the flavor profile and the structure. The eggs provide moisture and help bind the dough together, while the vanilla adds warmth and depth to the overall taste. Combine Dry Ingredients & Mix Into the Dough

Gradually add this dry mixture into your wet ingredients, while mixing on low speed or folding gently with a spatula. Mix just until fully combined and until you can no longer see the flour. Make sure NOT to overmix, as this can make the cookies tough instead of soft and chewy, which is what you want in the end for a perfectly textured cookie!
This step creates the structure and shape of the cookies. The flour provides the body which is what holds everything together, the baking soda helps them rise, and the salt enhances all the flavors as well as perfectly balancing out the sugars.
Make sure there are no large clumps of flour, but it’s okay if the dough looks slightly lumpy, that’s normal and helps create unique, textured cookies.
Folding in Chocolate Chips & Other Mix-ins
Gently fold in your chocolate chips (and any other mix-ins like white chocolate, sprinkles or crushed candy canes) until evenly distributed throughout the dough. Be careful NOT to overmix so your cookies stay soft and chewy.
This ensures that the chocolate is evenly spread throughout the dough for consistent flavor in every bite.
Portion & Bake
Use a tablespoon or an ice cream scooper to place the dough onto your prepared baking sheets, spacing the cookies just about 2 inches apart. Bake in your preheated oven for 9–10 minutes, (checking on them frequently so they don't over-bake), until edges are lightly golden but centers remain soft and looks lightly undercooked.
Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for about 5 extra minutes before transferring to a wire rack or an airtight container. (if you skip this step, the cookies will fall apart and lose their shape, this is because they are still warm and fragile and need to properly cool off to become more settled)
Proper spacing and baking time ensures that the cookies bake evenly all throughout, as well as stay soft in the center, and develop lightly golden edges which gives the yummy slight crunch at the end.
For an extra holiday, festive touch, drizzle some melted white chocolate over the cooled cookies and then sprinkle with Christmas sprinkles or crushed candy canes while the chocolate is still melted and runny!
