5 Minute Wall Christmas Tree
My wife has been wishing for a Christmas tree for years, but we've never been able to comfortably fit one. We simply don't have a big free space near our living room, unless we leave part of the family without comfy seating. This year I decided to surprise her & make a space saving tree that's hung on a wall. It turned out surprisingly nice, with very little effort!
Supplies
- Christmas Garland / Vine. Mine had a steel wire inside, which is useful for this project since it makes the garland stiffer. (5.4 meters, cost 18€)
- Twine. I used 4 mm thick jute twine. (about 4 meters) The twine could also be a bit thicker, but you need to be able to tie firm knots with it.
- Optional no 1: Christmas lights & Christmas tree decorations. We used ones that had been passed on in the family, since we finally had a great place to hang them! :)
- Optional no 2: A makeshift tree trunk underneath: Either from real wood, cardboard or whatever you can think of! We're still contemplating ours.
Tie the Garland
Here is the basic plan, the red is the twine, and green is the garland. Make a little loop in the pointy end that you can hang the tree with. If you're using very flexible (limp) garland, the edges of the tree may flop too close, and you'll need a support to the bottom of the tree to keep the edges away from each other. In that case, you can tie the twine to a piece of wood (maybe a twig from the yard). I didn't need any support in the bottom.
Hang and Decorate
You can hang it on a wall. I hung mine in front of a mirror. This way it looks more like a three dimensional tree, and thicker. I bent the garland a bit outward to make the depth effect better, and I also twisted the little branches outwards (so they're not pointing towars the wall). Suprisingly it looks realer than most of the fake fir trees you can find in the store! All in all, the project only took a few minutes after I figured out how to do it, and it cost about 18€ for the garland. It's possible to store it easily (when flat it's about 10 cm thick), either hang it in your wardrobe, or roll it up. I'm planning on putting mine inside a garment bag.
So here's an easy DIY project for you in case you're feeling Christmasy, but are short on space to display (or store) a full tree. Tell me if you make one, I'd love to see your results!
