How to Make Sugar Rockets
I got interested in rockets a while ago, but when I started, I began with a sugar based fuel. Sugar Rockets, a cheap and easy way to create a rocket motor. These rockets are farely stable, but do not produvce incredible amounts of thrust.
Supplies
- Powdered sugar
- KNO3 (Potassium Nitrate)/stump remover
- Empty Rocket Engine Casing
- Bentonite clay
- Water
- Wooden dowel, the size of the engine hole
- Small Allen wrench
- Scale
Safety
Please read what i have to say before attempting this project https://www.instructables.com/Safety-of-Pyrotechnics/
On all of these steps use safety.
Wear a mask and eyeglasses.
Follow government regulations.
Only put about 10 or less grams of fuel in a rocket.
Wear gloves.
Mixing the Fuel
Measure out 65 grams of KNO3 and 35 grams of powdered sugar and mix them together for about 5 minutes
Store in a airtight container away from electronics.
Making the Rocket Engine
Get the rocket engine casing and set it on a flat surface OUTSIDE.
Add the blended bentonite clay to the bottom of the engine and mash down with the wooden dowel until there is about 3/8 of an inch of clay in the engine casing.
Add about a teaspoon of fuel to the engine casing with the funnel and a spoon, then add a drop of water. Do this until you are about 3/8 of an inch from the top of the engine casing.
Fill the rest of the the engine casing with clay.
Mash down hard.
use a small Allen Wrench about 1/5 of an inch wide to make a hole through the clay on one side. Keep pressing until the wrench is almost through the whole engine.
Ignition of Rocket
Add a fuse in the air chamber created by the wrench.
Place the engine OUTSIDE away from flammable materials under a large rock.
Light the wick and run.
Watch and enjoy:)
