Brainstorming

Think about the overview of your board game. What mechanics will it have? Will it be multiplayer or singleplayer? Will there be a combat system? If there is what will that include. And write down these ideas. These are not final design decisions but they are the basis of your board game. If you are making a board game based on a video game like I did, think about what you would want from a board game adaptation as a consumer. You should also consider what is overly ambitious depending on your constraints. For my Terraria based board game I wanted to implement many of the features from the video game into my board game. An example of these features I brainstormed are in the picture.

Defining

The next step before making anything is to choose what you want in your game. Then define what does what. For example, how many card you'll have, what they'll do, how you'll acquire them. This will also help you define your rules by what you have. I went through and based most of my item stats based on what their stats in Terraria were. The pdf attached is of my in process defining document. The red text are the things that I cut for the sake of time and my constraints.

Creation

Once you have your idea of what you want to have in your board game it's time to start working on the physical pieces. I created my cards using 2 word docs for each set. I'd use one doc as the front of the cards and the other doc as the back of the cards. Then I printed the front on the printable business cards and put it through the printer again to print the back. PS. Don't print the back and front on the same side accidentally like I did.

The Board and Rules

The only remaining step in this guide is to create your board if you have one. One way I was considering is printing pictures and gluing them to the posterboard. You're also going to want to write down the official game rules now.

Finished

Ta-da! You're done. You've made a board games.
