Do you want to add those cool Mid-Century Modern (MCM) vibes to your room without blowing your entire savings on designer furniture? I totally get it.

Today, we’re making a DIY MCM floor lamp that costs about 60 RMB (less than 10 bucks!). The structure is super simple—literally like playing with Legos. Even if you’ve never built anything in your life, you can finish this in one afternoon. Ready? Let's go!

The Parts List (Easy as Legos)

Before we start, make sure you have these "pieces" ready. You can easily find these wood parts at a local shop or online:

  1. 3 Custom Wood Planks: These are the main legs (1.7cm thickness).
  2. 2 Custom Wood Rounds: To hold everything together.
  3. Lamp Socket Kit: Includes the bulb base and a metal cup.
  4. Power Cord: Get one with a switch, at least 2 meters long.
  5. Linen Lampshade: This gives it that authentic vintage feel.
  6. Wood Wax Oil & 320-Grit Sandpaper: For that smooth, professional finish.

To make sure your lamp looks balanced and stays sturdy, use these exact measurements:

PartMeasurement

Total Height

1400mm

Plank Thickness

17mm (1.7cm)

Top Gap

Top edge to 1st notch: 30mm (3cm)

Notch Distance

Bottom of 1st notch to top of 2nd: 250mm (25cm)

Wood Round Specs

100mm diameter, 10mm (1cm) center hole

Base Width

150mm support spread

Pretty easy, right? When the light is off, it’s a piece of minimalist art. When it’s on, it’s a total vibe.

Sanding and Oiling

This is where the magic happens. Use the 320-grit sandpaper and sand with the grain until the wood feels like silk. Then, apply the wood wax oil. You’ll see the color get deep and rich instantly—that’s where the "expensive" look comes from!

Assembling the Frame

Once the oil is dry, snap the three long planks and the two wood rounds together using the notches.

Tip: Install the hollow threaded rod into the 1cm hole in the center of the top round piece. This is the "spine" of your lamp, so make sure it's tight!

Wiring It Up

This sounds scary, but it’s actually really easy:

  1. Thread the power cord from the bottom up through the hollow rod.
  2. Slide on the metal decorative cup.
  3. Strip the wire ends and plug them into the lamp socket terminals.

The "Crowning" Ceremony

Last step! Put on your lampshade and screw in a warm-colored LED bulb. You’re done!
